What shortens a blowout

Sweat comes next. It reaches the root first, and the root is where the lift lives, so a workout on day one flattens the shape from the top down. Oil works the same way more slowly, which is why fine hair tends to lose its volume a day before thicker hair does.
Then friction. A cotton pillowcase, a tight hair tie that leaves a crease, and hands running through the lengths all rough up the cuticle that the blowout closed. None of it shows on the first evening. All of it shows on the second morning.
How to make a blowout last
Four habits hold it back, and each one adds a day.
Sleep on silk. A silk pillowcase reduces the friction that turns a clean set into a misshapen one by morning, so the shape lands softer and the next-day version is salvageable.
Keep the hair out of the steam. Shower with the door open, or with the hair pinned high under a cap, and leave it pinned until the room has cleared.
Use dry shampoo from day two. Worked into the root, it takes up the oil and returns the grip the root has lost.
Twist it loosely overnight. A loose twist at the crown, secured with a clip rather than an elastic, holds the geometry without leaving a crease.
Which finish lasts longest
The sleek finish holds best in air-conditioned rooms, with the cuticle closed flat. Outdoors in the humidity it is also the least forgiving, because a smooth surface shows every change the air makes to it.
Soft waves and textured finishes forgive more. When the air moves them, they move toward the look that was booked, so the second day often reads as intended rather than as a set that has dropped. Volume at the root is the first thing to go on fine hair, and dry shampoo is what brings it back.
Whatever the finish, the cool shot at the end of each section decides whether a set holds for two hours or for eight. By day three the lengths usually hold better than the root. That is the moment for a low bun or a sleek ponytail, which uses the smoothness that remains and hides the lift that has gone.
